College coaches were also allegedly bribed to label applicants as athletic recruits.
For this reason, the prosecutor said that formal charges have been filed against university officials, exam supervisors, parents and coaches.
"Beginning in 2011, and continuing to the present, the defendants conspired whose children were applying to college, and they used others to use bribery and other forms of fraud to facilitate their children's admission to colleges." .
